The Hand That Rocks The Cradle

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is a classic example of an unnecessary remake that still manages to (mostly) work. The film follows the rough premise of the 1992 original a struggling mother of two (including a newborn) hires a hard luck nanny who she soon discovers might be not who she seems, is it just paranoia or does this perfect stranger have more sinister plans? Okay let’s address the elephant in the room: this film doesn’t really need to exist, and yet in its uneven and formulaic way it does work as an enjoyable boilerplate thriller. It helps immensely when you have two leads as excellent as Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead who bring a lot to material that doesn’t always live up to them and the wrinkles to the narrative do feel at least somewhat interesting. Nothing groundbreaking but if we needed a remake of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, this is about as good as it needs to be.
