Anniversary


Anniversary is a powerful and provocative film that is destined to rile people up. The film centers on a family reunion for the anniversary of the patriarch and matriarch when the son brings home his new girlfriend tensions arise due to the young woman’s ties to the mother’s past. From here things take a turn and this quiet but tense domestic drama transforms before our eyes into an Orwellian thriller about the domino effects of facism with this family as a sort of political microcosm. Anniversary is a bleak and unforgiving film that asks a very challenging question of its audience: what if the child you raised with strong values and intelligence still grew up to be the architect for the breakdown of democracy and mankind? It’s a provocative idea that director Jan Komasa is completely unafraid of taking to its darkest possible conclusion without catharsis, easy answers or forced hope and because of this it will be a tough sell for many, i was completely enthralled. Anniversary is one of 2025’s hidden gems.
