The Mastermind

The Mastermind is a film that gave me a bit of an epiphany, this is my third try at understanding the appeal of filmmaker Kelly Reichardt and i have come to the conclusion that it is my favorite of the three films i have seen from this director and her style is not for me. This film about a man who turns to art theft in the early 70s and finds his life slowly unravel is an exercise in basically building a whole film around the mundanity that occurs around a heist and at least here i felt like the laconic stylings of Ms. Reichardt served a relevant narrative purpose but despite this and a strong cast i simply could not separate my admiration of this film from how much this filmmaker’s admittedly singular style leaves me cold. Keep it up Kelly, maybe one day it will click and  i will be smart enough to be worthy of your art.

I Give It 3 1/2 Stars!!!
